Journal: Empowering Your People
Instructions:
AMA Style with references!
Journal entries are private between you and the instructor. In this course, journals are low stakes opportunities to submit small portions of your final project. Utilize these journals to provide required details related to your final project, in addition to questions that still remain about the milestones.
Background Information
Great organizations do not exist in a vacuum. They exist as a result of a leader or leaders with strong philosophies and leadership skills. Where did the leadership team learn to be the type leader they are? When you read that a CEO has moved companies, you can surmise that he/she has learned some leadership skills that will help in the new company. If that CEO moved up through the ranks of a particular company, it is likely that leadership skills were gained through that promotion process.
A female leader can be found in Indra Nooyi, who began her career in India. Nooyi held product manager positions at Johnson & Johnson and textile firm Mettur Beardsell. Nooyi joined PepsiCo in 1994 and was named president and CFO in 2001. Nooyi directed the company''s global strategy for more than a decade and led PepsiCo''s restructuring, including the 1997 divestiture of its restaurants into Tricon, now known as Yum! Brands. Nooyi also took the lead in the acquisition of Tropicana in 1998 and the merger with Quaker Oats Company, which also brought Gatorade to PepsiCo.
We can also look at Jack Welch, from General Electric (GE), who worked at GE for twenty years before they tapped him for the CEO job. Jeffrey Immelt, CEO of General Electric, went to work there in 1982. He was tapped to be Welch'sreplacement in 2001, and is still there. So, we can make an argument that GE grows their own leadership and that their leadership style was formed at GE.
Prompt
In the final project, you will write about a company that has exemplary leadership. There are numerous companies that you can choose from. Take a look at the list of suggested organizations. If you know of an organization not on the list that you would rather write about, get it approved by your faculty member before completing this journal. In the journal, explain how the CEO or other administrator of your chosen organization leads. What is their leadership philosophy? What kind of leadership skills do they possess? You will utilize this company through milestones until Module Eight, where you will write a paper that synthesizes the entire image of the organization.
Tasks
1. Choose an organization from this list.
2. Describe the leadership philosophy of the organization or leaders within that organization.
3. Explain how the CEO, or other administrative leader of your chosen organization, applies leadership skills to lead the organization.
